Frequently
Asked Questions?
|
|
How
can I help my boyfriend? He drives drunk all the
time.
|
1.
Al-anon, http://www.al-anon-alateen.org/,
helps people understand how to not enable
alcoholics. They may be able to help you
confront him more effectively.
2. Some people take the path of reporting
people they care about but who just are not seeking
treatment, report them to the police, so they can be
arrested and face their problems through the
courts. If he were arrested in Holladay or
Taylorsville he could get the opportunity to go
through the terrific drug court program to get to
sobriety and clean up the rest of his life. She
could get someone else to report him, if she
doesn't want to do it herself. To make an arrest
for dui law enforcement must be able to follow him as
he drives to give them "cause" to pull him
over ( weaving or no lights on, etc.) If he regularly
drinks and drives on a certain path and time, she
could give the police the license number and
description of the car, where it is and where it is
going. This is what one of our members did to
finally stop his father in law from destructing on
alcohol, before he hurt himself and others any more
than he'd already hurt them. Sometimes this is
love.
3. It is good to realize that at some point, only
the alcoholic can make the change, no matter how much
you love them and want them to get better. At
some point, if he doesn't change, it may be wise to
take a hard look at what you want from your life, and
if this constant struggle nowhere is not it, go
find it. Your happiness is up to you, not
others.
4. There are counseling service Judicial
Supervision Services, http://www.fcaonline.org/jsp.htm,
that has an excellent alcohol and
drug counseling staff who could do an assessment and
then on the basis of that private services to them if
she could get him to go. If he won't go for an
assessment, then this is a clear message of what she
is working with, so she may have to look at options
other than staying and having him change.
